The answer to the "whys"

Affirmation: “Good enough never is.”-Debbi Fields

As a competitive and driven person, I am constantly striving for achievement. Many times people ask me who I am competing with.  My answer is typically, “No one” to which people typically respond, “Yeah, right!”

Truthfully, I’m not in competition with anyone which I realize may be hard to believe. I like to grow.  I like to improve.  I like to get better.  My goal is not to compete with anyone else.  If people feel that I am competing with them, then that is their issue.  I am simply driven because I don’t like complacency. I have high expectations for myself which has led to my success. Good enough is never good enough, right Mrs. Fields?

My lack of complacency has left many in my entourage scratching their heads at times.  Why would she leave such a great job? Why would she leave such a great company? Why would she leave her marriage? Why? Why? Why?

The answer to the incessant “whys” over the years has always been very personal.  It has never been about anyone else. It’s always been about me, as selfish as that may sound.  For me, good enough is never good enough.  A good enough job isn’t good enough.  A good enough company isn’t good enough. A good enough marriage isn’t good enough. I would rather take a risk than stay complacent.

I want better.  I want the best for my life. I will continue to pursue more as long as I see fit. I invite you to join me.

I think the trick is getting to the point of competing with yourself. So many facets of life force comparisons to others (and sometimes for good reason) but it's very challenging to stop looking at everyone else and focus on what really matters. I believe it was Anne Lamott who said something along the lines of "you can't compare your insides to other people's outsides."
