Affirmation: “Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.” - Oprah Winfrey
In June of 2013, leanin.org launched their “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” campaign. Women of all ages, backgrounds and experiences weigh in on tumblr and the responses have been intriguing and surprising.
The universal truth in this campaign is that we are all afraid and the fears range from changing hair styles to running for president.
How can we inspire the next generation of women to release their fear?
I’ll start by showing them the way.
I was afraid to blog and to write. To me, writing is a very permanent and concrete form of expression. Publishing written content opens me, my thoughts and my ideas up to criticism and misinterpretation. I am afraid that people will misinterpret my intentions. I don’t want to be misinterpreted. It feels unsafe, uncomfortable and scary. But I’m doing it anyway.
I have learned to face my fear of failure. I have written things that people don’t like and they’ve let me know they don’t like it. And I’m still here. I’m still writing. Why? Because I enjoy it and it stretches me to reach outside my comfort zone. I’m still writing because I can choose to focus on the people who don’t like what I have to say or on the people who DO like what I have to say. I choose the latter.
My message won’t reach everyone and won’t inspire all people in the same why. It inspires me and if I can positively inspire at least one other person in the world, I will have done my job.
So I ask you, what would you do if you weren’t afraid?
