A great friend of mine gave me the gift of a book this holiday season. Oh, how I love to get books! (#24 on my list of gifts.)
The book, One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, encourages readers to observe the little things in life that bring gratitude. The concept of noticing the small things isn't new, but what is new is that she challenges readers to create a list (I love lists! #47) with the goal (I love goals! #48) of reaching 1000 gifts. I am currently up to 52.
Taking time to write down life's gifts forces you to slow down and apppreciate the small things daily and in everything you do. You notice and silently acknowledge the overly friendly flight attendant that makes everyone laugh and relax on the long flight (#15). You notice and silently acknowledge the smell of fresh baked cookies wafting through the house (#52). You notice and silently acknowledge the sound of the kids supporting one another while playing their new game in the other room (#51). You notice and silenty acknowledge the minor details of life that get overlooked. You notice and silently acknowledge the simple things that make life worthwhile.
As we begin a new year, I challlenge you to start your own One Thousand Gifts initiative. Notice the small things. Write them down. Grow your list. Watch life change. Gratitude.
